The Fernandina Beach Police Department has learned that the human remains found on the beach in the early morning hours of June 2, 2015 have been identified as 34 year old Steven Shaw of Valdosta, Georgia, who was presumed drowned on May 30th near Beach Access #13.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted DNA testing to determine that the remains were those of Shaw, who attempted to rescue two family members, an 18 year old and a juvenile, but was overcome by strong currents and was last seen more than fifty feet from shore.

Fernandina Beach Lifeguards were able to rescue the two swimmers in distress, but unable to locate Shaw in the rough surf. Mr. Shaw was considered a good swimmer and was in good physical condition.

Although a very tragic situation, I know the Shaw family gains some relief from their sorrow in being able to finalize his return to them for his final rites.
