Friends of Fernandina Aviation Awards Scholarships At their May monthly meeting, the Friends of Fernandina Aviation (FOFA, www.fofaviation.com) recognized the winners of their 2018 scholarships for the National Flight Academy (NFA, www.nationalflightacademy.com) in Pensacola, FL. The NFA is an adjunct of the US Naval Aviation Museum and provides a week-long, STEM-oriented camp for students 12-18 years old. Those awarded scholarships this year are from Fernandina Beach Middle School, Yulee Middle School, and St. Michael’s Academy.

In recognizing the scholarship winners, FOFA President, Mickey Baity stated, “This is the third consecutive year for this program. Initially, we started with two students, went to eight last summer and now we’re up to 12 this year. We are thrilled to have grown so quickly and this would not have been possible without our funding partners, the Concours d’Elegance, Rotary Amelia Island Sunshine, Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport and individual donors. We select 8th grade students for this program because we believe this is a critical age to promote an interest in STEM education and eventually STEM careers.

This year’s scholarships represent a $15,000 investment in some of our brightest young people. We also recognize the science teachers and school counselors who help us identify candidates for these scholarships. We are incredibly proud of these young scholars, their teachers and their parents.”

Mr. Baity added, “Since our inception in 2011, FOFA has awarded more than $60,000 in educational scholarships to Nassau County students. Currently, we are in the early stages of establishing a scholarship for a full-tuition, two-year Associate Degree in Aviation Management at FSCJ for a Nassau County high school senior. We plan to award our first scholarship for this program next spring.”

Students in the 8th grade next year who are interested in competing for an NFA scholarship can find more information on the FOFA website or consult their science teacher or guidance counselor. Organizations or individuals interested in becoming a funding partner for our NFA program or our new FSCJ scholarship, should contact FOFA President, Mickey Baity, [email protected]; 904-556-6136.
