The fifth annual Storytelling Slam was postponed in October due to threats of high wind from Hurricane Michael, which we luckily escaped. However, it has been rescheduled and it will brighten your January! Five area story tellers will compete for the coveted title of “Island Tales Story Champion” on the evening of Thursday, January 24th, at St. Peter’s Burns Hall, 801 Atlantic Avenue. Presented by Friends of the Library, this year’s storytelling theme, “Feast or Famine”, runs the gamut of emotions with thrills, laughs, surprises and more. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and libations first, then sit back and be regaled by some of our area’s finest storytellers.

Our Mistress of Ceremonies is Arlene Filkoff, who has been active with the Friends of the Library for many years. She is looking forward to welcoming our guests to her world, as storytelling is one of her favorite things to do! Our cast is made up of familiar faces from our vibrant community theaters in Fernandina Beach. Our group of five storytellers consists of Jeff Groden-Thomas, Doug McDowell, Annette Rawls, Rachel Tyler and Cass Willford, who are all ready to regale you with their “Feast or Famine” tales. The winner of our fourth Storytelling Slam, Sinda Nichols, will also be there to present the trophy to this year’s winner.

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with fine food sponsored by Café Karibo, a cash bar, and entertainment by The Eastbound Duo, Early McCall and Ernie Ealum. Storytellers will take the stage at 7;00 p.m. to entertain you and earn your votes. The stakes are high as audience members will vote with cash for their favorite storyteller. Tickets for votes will be on sale during the event with proceeds going to the Friends of the Library. FOL provides funding and support for up-to-date reading materials, furnishings, technology and educational programs for the community at the Fernandina Beach Library.

Tickets for the event are now on sale at the Fernandina Beach Library on N.4th Street or on line at fernandinafol.org, the website for the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library. Tickets for the reception and the storytelling slam are $50 for general admission. Get your tickets now, as it promises to be a fun filled evening! Stories and libraries are a natural fit!
