Fernandina Beach Police issues press release on drowning incident

Police DeptThe Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguards responded to an emergency call of multiple swimmers in distress at Beach Access # 13 (1300 Block South Fletcher Ave) at 1:15 PM today. Once on scene lifeguards immediately entered the ocean and rescued two swimmers, an 18 YOA male and 16 YOA female. Other lifeguards arrived and began a search of the surf for the third swimmer who remains missing. The missing swimmer, a 32 YOA man from Georgia, is now presumed to have drowned.

A search of the area was conducted by the Fernandina Beach Police Department, Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, US Coast Guard, Florida Wildlife Commission, & the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. The search by water has been suspended for the night. Fernandina Beach Officers will continue to search the shoreline throughout the night and additional efforts will resume in the morning.
