The Fernandina Beach City Commission honored local citizen Charles Eugene Richo with a resolution passed unanimously at its August 18, 2015 Regular Meeting to recognize the Peck Center Sports Field as the Charles Eugene Richo Sports Field. The Peck Alumni Association overwhelmingly endorsed this designation.
Richo, one of seven children, graduated from Peck High School in 1959. Employed by the City of Fernandina Beach as Supervisor of the Elm Street Recreation Center from 1978 to 1995, he dedicated countless hours to coaching, managing and mentoring Fernandina Beach youth. He contributed to the development of numerous sports programs including the Elm Street Little League baseball program, the Elm Street Wolves football program, Buddy League Baseball, Buddy League Basketball, the Girls Softball program, as well as an adult basketball league. Richo also assisted with the organization of the Elm Street Sportsman Club.
Through his work, the proclamation stated, “Mr. Richo mentored countless young people by promoting excellence in education, individual performance and personal improvement with nurturing words, kind encouragement and positive reinforcement.”
Mayor Boner read and delivered the resolution to Mr. Richo, who was applauded by audience members. In accepting the resolution, Richo thanked Wayne Peterson for bringing the renaming idea forward and the Peck Alumni Association for its support. “And last but not least,” he said, “I’d like to thank the city commission for voting me this honor. To receive such an honor while you are still living is a blessing.”
