City of Fernandina Beach employees were  hard at work in the hot  morning sun to demolish the old main beach boardwalk.  The first phase of demolition focuses on  the walkway at the foot of Atlantic Avenue.

Rotted  joists, and decking were loaded into large dumpsters.  According to Rex Lester, City maintenance manager, this section of the boardwalk appeared to be built on top of a concrete revetment placed in the area years ago to control erosion.

The demolition work will make way for a new structure.

Rex and his crew will do a yeoman’s job of clearing out the old, rotted boardwalk. The new one will result in improved access to the Main Beach area and a welcomed one to those that are in wheelchairs or have difficulty walking. Plus the reduced maintenance costs to the City will be another plus.
