A grass roots effort to designate an additional portion of Highway A1A as a scenic and historic highway under the State of Florida Scenic Highways Program. The proposal under consideration is to seek an extension of the existing “Historic and Scenic Highway A1A,” from its ending point at the St John’s County line through Duval County and the Jacksonville Beaches to Amelia Island in Nassau County.

The purpose of the State of Florida Scenic Highways Program is to protect the resources along the route, to promote tourism and positive experiences for travelers, and to encourage value added public and private investment. Central to the process is the involvement of private citizens, advocates, voluntary groups and civic organizations that get together to form what is known as a “corridor advocacy group,” or CAG. The impetus for the CAG comes not from government but from people who are dedicated to preserving, maintaining, and improving the intrinsic scenic, historic, archeological, paleontological, cultural and recreational resources within and adjacent to the highway corridor. We believe that this portion of A1A is unique and special and qualifies for designation under the State of Florida program.

The first formal public meeting to discuss the program and begin forming the CAG will be held in Nassau County on June 3, 2013.
