The Amelia Island Museum of History invites you to its next Brown Bag Lunch on Wednesday, December 7th at noon. Special guest Jim Longacre will deliver a presentation entitled Christmas on Amelia Island – 1863. Christmas of 1863 was a unique time for the United States and for Amelia Island. Union soldiers, local civilians, freed slaves, and people still suffering in bondage celebrated the holidays in a time of great change, turmoil, and hope. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in January of 1863, and everything had changed. People from all walks of life tried to forge ahead and adapt to a brand new world order. In December of 1863, millions of people experienced Christmas for the first time as free Americans by law. Join us as we explore this unique time and place in history.
This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come/first-served. For more information contact Gray at 261-7378 ext 102, or [email protected]. Amelia Island Museum of History 233 S. 3rd St.
