Building height again questioned on South Fletcher Avenue

Submitted by Susan Hardee StegerDSCN0168

Is a house under construction in Fernandina Beach too high?  That is a question that has been asked during several building projects throughout the years on South Fletcher Avenue, and now the question is being asked again on a home being built next to a  landmark vacation rental, Katie’s Light.

According to Adrienne Burke, director of community development, a number of people have called to inquire about the South Fletcher property.

Burke has reviewed the permit application and says,  “The plans are compliant with the Land Development Code (LDC).”  For homes being constructed that are higher than 25 feet, side yard setbacks are increased.  Since the South Fletcher house is 35 feet high, 10 foot side setbacks are required.

Burke  said the City has contacted the engineer of record who is in touch with the contractor.  The City is requesting an additional survey to verify setbacks and height.  “It is not uncommon to ask for this information,” says Burke.

We are planning to spend the month of January on Amelia Island. We have never been to the Island, but we have heard good things about it, and it looks nice online. “Katie’s Light” is one of the rental properties we considered, after seeing it on several online rental sites. I had no idea that there was a huge house being built right next door to it. The new building is not in any of the photos. Glad we decided on a different property!

I have watched The Box be born. Sorta like historic Montauk Light house and a concrete tower bunker built during WWII to watch for German subs at the end of Long Island NY. The two just do not fit. I am very glad I have pictures of Katie’s light before the Box. Side it with whatever it’s still a box.
