Fernandina Beach Mayor John A. Miller read a Proclamation at the August 16, 2016 Regular Meeting of the Fernandina Beach City Commission (FBCC) declaring August 20, 2016 as International Homeless Animals’ Day and August as Homeless Animals’ Month in the city.

Miller called attention to efforts that began 24 years ago to call attention to the suffering of homeless companion animals and the problems associated with pet overpopulation. He said that the overpopulation crisis can be resolved in a variety of ways: adopting a dog or cat from your local animal shelter, having dogs and cats spayed or neutered, volunteering at the animal shelter, donating much needed supplies, or by sponsoring spay or neuter surgery.

Beth Hackney of Cat’s Angels, Inc. accepted the Proclamation. She thanked Mayor Miller and the FBCC for recognizing the problems posed by homeless animals. She reported that over the past 16 years, her organization has spayed or neutered over 16,000 cats and dogs and has found homes for 6,000 of them. “We work very, very hard,” she said, “and we are a volunteer group. We appreciate the wonderful support from our community. We’re very lucky. Thank you so much.”

The work by Cat’s Angels and the Humane Society is outstanding. A “cat’s meow” to all the volunteers!

Cat’s Angels is truly amazing. While promoting “adopt don’t shop,” Cat’s Angels makes it possible to shop AND adopt in their awesome thrift store at 709 S 8th St.
Not only do they have incredible bargains and huge variety of items, but also house a beautiful, clean kitty sanctuary within. The cats are always happy to see visitors and the hardworking volunteers are truly overjoyed when a good human finds their purrfect feline soulmate and vice-versa!
If you’re considering adopting, please make Cat’s Angels your first stop. And if you’re starting to think about that long Christmas gift list on a short budget, definitely pay a visit and start grabbing bargains soon. Stuff goes fast and inventory changes often!
