Editor’s Note: When the Historic Nassau County Courthouse Clock Tower had to be replaced, traffic came to a halt on Centre Street. I heard that the Nassau County Board of Commissioners considered not replacing the original clock tower which had to be removed because it was structurally unsound. Thanks to strong opposition from the community, a new clock tower was obtained. I’ll leave it up to others to give a date as to when this work took place, and to chime in if they have more information. We hope you enjoy this look back in time.
Breaking News: Jayne Nasrallah, who is an archivist with the A.I. Museum of History has given us a date. According to Jayne, it was 1996 when the clock tower was replaced. Thank you Janye!
Chiming in about the bell tower 🙂 …Hal Belcher donated a series of photos of the replacement of the bell tower to the Amelia Island Museum of History. They document the arrival of the new bell tower and its installation. They are dated 1996 as are other entries in the archives.
Good research by Jane Nasrallah. Once again the Amelia Island Museum of History has the answers. Everyone who hasn’t visited the Museum at Third and Cedar, should drop by sometime. It is open 6.5 days per week.
Love our old courthouse, it is so beautiful inside and out❤
Curious…..If the courthouse bell tower was “replaced” only 22 years ago, why is it being replaced again now? Is the problem the supporting structure the tower or both? How long was the original bell tower in use before replacement?
Lowell, This is an old photo taken in 1996. The bell tower is fine!
