The Amelia Island Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently held a book fair to benefit the Peck Library at the corner of Elm and 11th streets.

Chapter Regent Lynn Leisy (far right) and Sue Nelson, owner of The Book Loft (center) stand with members of the Literacy Promotion Committee. From right to left are Regent Leisy, Bebe Granger, Sheila Carlin, Sue Nelson, Becky Mayle, and Tonia Quarterman.

The chapter’s Literacy Promotion Committee, chaired by Marie Santry, is participating in a program to assist Peck Library Director Mrs Ernie Albert to maintain and expand this all-volunteer library of approximately 5,000 volumes and to foster a love for books in our local children.

Working with Sue Nelson, the committee selected books for the Peck Library, and then displayed them for chapter members to purchase. Committee Chairwoman Santry said that chapter members bought over $400 in children’s books to replace or supplement the books currently on the library’s shelves.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is the largest women’s service organization in the world and contributes over one million volunteer hours a year. The almost 200 members of the Amelia Island Chapter contribute approximately 5,000 volunteer hours and $5,000 in scholarships and awards in Nassau County each year.
