Congratulations to our Budding Authors and Winners of the

Amelia Island Book Festival Short Story Contest for Middle and High School Students!

Congratulations to Nassau County students Brighton Burkhart (Fernandina Beach Middle School) and Siara Lockwood (Fernandina Beach High School), who took home first-place honors in the Amelia Island Book Festival Student Short Story Contest. Skyla Macy (Callahan Middle School) and Victoria David, (Fernandina Beach High School) placed second.

The first-place winners were each awarded a $200 cash prize and the privilege of having their winning entry posted for a year on the AIBF website. And, their teachers were awarded $50 to use in their classrooms. Second place winners were each awarded a $100 cash prize. The teacher awards went to Heather Pinckney from FBMS and Mandy Purvis, at FBHS.

More than twice as many students as the prior year participated in the county-wide contest.

“I’m thrilled with the participation across the county this year,” said contest coordinator, Cynthia Griffin.

Each student entry was reviewed by three published authors who judged for excellence in the craft of narrative short story fiction, including character development, dialogue, plot, setting, conflict and resolution, as well as grammar and spelling. All participating students received individual feedback on their entries from the judges.
