Amelia Community Theatre begins its 39th season on September 6 with the play Tiny Beautiful Things on the Studio 209 stage at 209 Cedar Street.

The play is based on Cheryl Strayed’s book by the same name and is the true story of her two years as Sugar, an online advice columnist who answered thousands of anonymous letters with startling honestly. In 2012, Strayed revealed herself as Sugar, and also published her best-selling book, Wild about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

Nia Vadalos, best known for writing and starring in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, adapted Strayed’s book into a play. The Kirkus Review describes the show as an “intimate exchange between strangers.”

ACT’s production is directed by Diana Herman, with Edie Blankenberg as Sugar, and Rebecca Brown, Lance Rapelye and Katie Stanley as letter writers. Director Herman says, “Tiny Beautiful Things grabbed me from the first page. The character Sugar manages to help others transcend their problems by showing her own vulnerability. Her words connect us, and we understand that we are not alone.”

Tiny Beautiful Things is co-sponsored by Amelia Lifelong Learning and Coastal Cloud.

Performances are at 8 p.m. on September 6-7, 12-14, and at 2 p.m. on September 8. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students through college, available at (904) 261-6749, and beginning September 1, online at www.AmeliaCommunityTheatre.org. The play has a suggested R-rating for adult language and content.

Season tickets are on sale at ACT, including the 12-show season ticket package for $195 that includes admission to the six studio and the six main stage shows in the 2019-2020 season.
