Special Olympics Florida Summer Games to be held April 7, 2018

April 3, 2018 3:36 p.m.

Special Olympics Florida’s annual Area 5 Summer Games will be held this Saturday, April 7th at Atlantic Coast High School. Hundreds of athletes with intellectual and developmental differences from the seven North Florida counties will compete in six Olympic-style sports: Bocce, Soccer, Track & Field, Cycling, Volleyball, and Tennis. After the day of competition, select winners will go on to compete in the State Summer games at ESPN Wide World of Sports on May 18-19th.

The Area 5 Summer Games will truly be a huge community event with hundreds of local volunteers and organizations coming out to assist and cheer on athletes during competition. The excitement will kick-off with opening ceremonies featuring an athlete parade, 99.9 Gator Country, Lite 96.1, and the traditional lighting of the Special Olympics flame of hope. After opening ceremonies, Olympic Village will host all sorts of family fun including snow cones and other refreshments, VSA Florida, a DJ, the TraumaOne helicopter and much more!

Special Olympics Florida competition and awards ceremonies will be running throughout the day. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy great music, food, fun, and most importantly- the kind of competition that reminds us that winning doesn’t always mean coming in first place.
