If you’re craving authentic Mexican cuisine and aren’t in the mood for a sit-down restaurant, Las Tres Fronteras Tacos is the meals-on-wheels food truck you never knew you needed. On S. Eighth Street, outside of Advance Auto Parts, the colorful food truck lights up the evening with a delectable array of tasty to-go meals.
Despite not being a newcomer to the area, Las Tres Fronteras Tacos can easily go unnoticed, and I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about. With a relatively small but diverse menu, the food truck offers great options at a fair price. Which begs the question: What do they offer?
From tacos and burritos to huaraches and sopes, there’s something here for anyone who loves Mexican food. One of the most surprising things to me was that they offer lengua and tripa as protein options: beef tongue and small intestines, baby. If that doesn’t make your stomach rumble, that’s okay because traditional protein choices are in abundance.
I started off with three tacos: carne asada ($4.50), barbacoa ($3.99), and pollo ($3.99). The corn tortillas were warm and had that comforting aroma. The added lime wedges, cilantro and generously chopped onions added a friendly punch to the already flavorful tacos. While these were delicious, the barbacoa tacos won my heart -- tender and delicious.
Next, I opted for something safe: A carne asada quesadilla ($10.99). I feel like this is the best option at any Mexican establishment because you can’t really go wrong with one. And this was a tasty, loaded quesadilla with a nice sear on the outside. I always love it when there’s a little bit of texture from the crunch. And the amount I received for the price surprised me. In a good way.
Unfortunately, I’m not brave enough to order beef tongue or tripas, but I wanted to try two more items from the food truck. The first being their sopes ($6.99). Which is masa de maíz frita or fried corn dough that is round with crimped edges. Once again, they loaded it with cheese, avocado slices, and steak. I’d never had a sope before, but it was wonderful. Much thicker than a tostada, but with an equally crispy exterior and a soft, pillowy interior.
I finished my excursion with an order of the huaraches ($7.99). If you’ve never tried one, it’s like a sope, as it’s made from masa but more flat and oval-shaped. I got this with their pollo and it was extremely filling. There’s not much else I can say about it that I haven’t said previously since it uses all the same toppings, but value-wise, this is the clear winner for me. Piled high with protein and toppings, it was a beast of epic proportions.
If you’re in the mood for some delicious and authentic Mexican food that you can grab on the go, Las Tres Fronteras Tacos is a winning bet. It would be hard to find a better contender, considering the easily accessible price point and portion size. And since the food truck is a single block from Taco Bell, I’d pick it over the fast-food chain any day of the week.
Las Tres Fronteras Tacos is open Tues. - Sat. starting at 4 p.m. and running till around 10 p.m., depending on the day. Look for the colorful lights and enticing aroma the next time you’re on S. Eighth Street. And let me know if I should try the beef tongue or tripas.
