The Nassau County Canvassing Board conducted a tabulated recount Wednesday and confirmed Genece Minshew as the winner over Vice Mayor David Sturges for Seat 2 of the Fernandina Beach City Commission.
According to the board's rules, the recount is considered a second unofficial certification of the city commission election. Final certification will be Friday.
City Clerk Caroline Best said in an email today: "The Nassau County Canvassing Board convened earlier today to conduct the recount for Seat 2 candidates. Results indicate Ms. Genece Minshew surpassed Vice Mayor David Sturges by 19 votes. Certified election results will be available on or before November 15."
There were 9,250 votes cast in the Seat 2 race with 633 undervotes, meaning voters did not select either candidate on their ballot. Minshew's margin was .2% and state law mandates a recount at .5% or lower.
It was Minshew's third campaign for a city commission seat.
She will take office next Tuesday along with Joyce Tuten and Tim Poynter on the commission. Commissioner James Antun begins a two-year term as mayor.
