The Nassau Humane Society’s first Hound Hike is underway! It’s a virtual dog-walking fundraiser designed to aid NHS’s life-saving mission, and bring our community together to celebrate our furry family members.

The event starts Tuesday, April 13 and runs through Tuesday, April 20. It’s easy to get involved and show your support for homeless animals. Simply visit, click on the Hound Hike logo, fill out the online registration form and pay the $20 participation fee. Then you can enlist your friends, colleagues and family members to sponsor your pet, and get to hiking around your neighborhood!

If you don’t have a hound to hike with, no problem! The event is all-inclusive, so cats walking on leashes, rabbits hopping around your yard, or even your hamsters running on their exercise wheels can participate.

If you love animals but don’t currently have one yourself, don’t worry — you can still help NHS save hundreds of lives by sponsoring an NHS shelter dog during Hound Hike week. Simply register and choose an adoptable NHS dog, and our dedicated volunteers will walk the dog on your behalf. Who knows, your generosity could also result in finding a forever home for the shelter dog you’ve chosen, since he or she might be spotted while on his or her walk.

The hike began April 13, and the first 100 participants to register will receive a special-edition superhero Funko board game, donated by Funko. Individual contributions of over $100 will receive an NHS baseball hat or travel mug, or both for individual contributions over $200.

There will also be prizes for the most money raised, the most creative video, and more. So, make sure to take some fun videos and photos of you and your pet(s) on a walk, get creative with your campaign and share your videos and details on social media, and encourage others to donate to your fundraiser for the animals of NHS!

Fundraising through the Hound Hike is easy and can quickly become very rewarding — if you and your pet get 10 of your friends to sponsor your pet for $10, that’s already $100 raised.

Nassau Humane hopes to make the Hound Hike an annual event, in the tradition of our Pasta 4 Paws spaghetti supper, and looks forward to seeing our community and their pets strutting their stuff! For more information, please call the shelter at (904) 321-1647.
