Contact Kathy Russell with the Fernandina Beach Department of Parks and Recreation for information on how to join the Invader Raiders, a local volunteer group with a mission to rid the island of invasive plant species. Thank you.

If anyone would like to see examples of boston fern, mexican petunia, wedelia, bamboo and other invasive plants that are planted in people’s landscapes and that have invaded natural areas just travel on Forrest Drive on Amelia Island. Forrest Drive is a short road west of Harris Teeter (for old timers, it ended at the Sandbar restaurant and was named for Forrest Osborne sp? who owned the Sandbar). It is very obvious that Dr. Clem is accurate in describing the ability of the invasive plants to escape landscaped areas and take over natural areas. One trip on Forrest and the need to eliminate the use of these plants in landscaping is easy to understand!
