Spring has sprung on Centre Street.  After years of speculation and months of behind-the-scenes preparation, work has begun in earnest to repair and stabilize Fernandina Beach’s historic Post Office Building.  Scaffolding surrounds both the Centre Street and 4th Street entrances.  Today, crews appeared to be working on scraping window frames on the second floor of the Centre Street facade.

The U.S. Postal Service has worked with the Florida Division of Historical Resources in devising a plan to stabilize the building while protecting its historic integrity.  Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D) has been a strong supporter and has pushed hard to come up with federal funding to underwrite the project.

As of this writing, the local Postal Service branch will remain open during its normal hours of service throughout construction.

As more information becomes available, the Fernandina Observer will keep you updated.
