Vy Star Credit Union Celebrates Larry Myers for 40 Years of Service

Editor’s Note:  The Fernandina Observer congratulates Larry Myers for his 40 years of service at VyStar.  Having worked with Larry when he served as moderator during a number of  Fernandina Observer Candidate Forums, we have had to pleasure to get to know him and appreciate his skills.  VyStar is indeed fortunate to have Larry on their team!

Jacksonville, Florida — VyStar Credit Union is honored to recognize Larry D. Myers for his 40 years of service to the organization, during which time he has served in multiple capacities on the Board of Directors and helped oversee significant growth in terms of membership and resources.

Mr. Myers first joined VyStar’s Board of Directors in 1977 and spent two years as Chair (1984-86) and three years as Vice Chair (1990-93). VyStar had three full-service branches when Mr. Myers joined and today has 62, in addition to 18 high school branches. Among his contributions to the credit union, Mr. Myers has seen VyStar’s assets grow from $225 million to more than $12 billion and its field of membership expand substantially from its start at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.

“VyStar owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Mr. Myers, who has consistently served our members with the utmost respect and integrity,” said VyStar President/CEO Brian Wolfburg. “His work across Northeast Florida has impacted countless individuals, and it is truly an honor to have him represent VyStar. Our organization wouldn’t be the same without him.”

Larry Myers graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Building Construction and entered the Civil Engineer Corps of the U.S. Navy. He served 24 years active duty, including a year in Vietnam supervising the construction of Cam Ranh Air Base. Among his other roles, Mr. Myers was the Operations Officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1 on Diego Garcia, the Commanding Officer of Naval Schools Construction in Davisville, R.I., the Commanding Officer of the Naval Construction Training Center in Gulfport, Miss., and the Executive Officer of the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Building Official and a Certified Real Estate Appraiser.

Mr. Myers earned a Master of Arts in Human Resources at Pepperdine and a Master of Science in Financial Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. In addition to his credit union service and Naval service, Mr. Myers spent an active career in City and County Management, including overseeing the construction of the Houston Astros Spring Training Complex in Osceola County. He also served as the City Manager of Orange Park and Fernandina Beach, County Manager of Ware and Nassau counties and four years as the Legislative Aide to Aaron Bean. Mr. Myers enjoys Strategic Planning and working with people.

Mr. Myers has two daughters: Mindy, an electrical engineer with Northrup Grumman, and Monica, a physician at Mayo Clinic. He also has four grandchildren: Michelle, Melissa, Dylan and Mia.
