Amelia Community Theatre presents the drama The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on the main stage at 207 Cedar Street. It’s sponsored by Wallace Pierson Travel.
The intriguing play, adapted by Simon Stephens and based on Mark Haddon’s award winning novel, won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. The book and play title comes from lines in a Sherlock Holmes short story, “The Adventure of Silver Blaze.” In the story, when a dog didn’t bark during a night-time attack, Sherlock Holmes found that a “curious incident.”
In ACT’s production, Christian Douglas plays Christopher, a fifteen -year-old boy who is exceptional in math but doesn’t like to be touched or make eye contact with others. As the show begins, Christopher discovers that a neighbor’s dog is dead, and begins an investigation to find out what happened. As Christopher embarks on his life-changing adventure, he learns truths about his family, and also about himself.
Although terms like autism spectrum and Aspergers’s Syndrome are never directly applied to Christopher, they are implied. Novelist Haddon says, “Christopher sees and experiences the world differently in a surprising and revealing way.” The show’s lighting and sound design help to create Christopher’s world which can be confusing and exhilarating.
The show is directed by Tener Wade, and the cast includes Susie Bledsoe, Lisa Howard-Welch, Ron Kurtz, Lauren Ousley, Leslie Ousley, Steve Parrott, Ryan Sadler, Richard Smith, and Sue Weiner.
Performances are at 8 p.m. on June 6-8, 13-15, 20-22 and at 2 p.m. on June 16. The show is rated PG-13 for adult language. The ACT box office is open from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and also ninety minutes before curtain on show dates.
