Sahara Desert plume passes by Amelia Island

Editor’s Note:  An early morning email brought this photo of today’s sunrise over Amelia Island.  It is hard to imagine that a dust plume originating in the Sahara Desert is lingering in the skies over Amelia Island.   According to Margaret, the plume brings with it a slight odor as well.  If you look closely, you will see in the distance, a paddleboarder who happens to be  Margaret Milton’s husband. Thank you Margaret for sending this photo our way.

Climatologists have long known about the Saharan dust plumes that arrive seasonally in the Amazon, and ecologists now point to them as essential in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in that rainforest. Rare that these dust plumes reach us here on Amelia Island; perhaps they are part of the new normal with climate change.
