On Tuesday, December 9, voters  in the City of Fernandina Beach will choose between incumbent Charlie Corbett and Tim Poynter for a seat on the Fernandina Beach City Commission.  Corbett and Poynter face each other in a run off election since neither candidate in the general election received a majority of the vote.

Vicki Cannon 2
Vick Cannon, Supervisor of Elections
Nassau County

Vicki Cannon, Nassau County Supervisor of Elections answered a number of questions concerning the run off election posed by the Fernandina Observer.

Will early voting take placed in the Fernandina election?

No.  An early voting alternative is available.  “We should have ballots by the end of next week or early the following week.  A Vote by Mail ballot can be picked up at our office  [Historic Nassau County Court House in Fernandina Beach], voted and returned back to us during the same visit.

“The city opts out of early voting pursuant to law. Many cities do [opt out] as a result of the cost.”

Deadline to request mail in ballots?

“Vote by Mail ballots may be requested to be mailed until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the runoff election.” Click here for information to obtain a vote by mail ballot.

If a voter previously signed up in the past to receive vote by mail ballots for all elections, they will receive a mail ballot for the upcoming run off.

“There is a simple way for voters to check their Vote by Mail status, according to Cannon. They can look up their information on our website by clicking on this link . On our website, it is the Voter Status button in the upper right hand corner, and another option is under the menu on the left, click My Voter Information, then click My Voter Record and the voter will input their information and see their record.”

Will all three voting locations be opened for the run off election?

“Yes. Voters will vote at their Election Day polling places just as they do in county elections.”

Unregistered voters

Unregistered voters who wish to qualify to vote in the upcoming December 9 run off election will have until Monday, November 10 to register.

Registration can take place in the Supervisor of Elections Offices (SOE)  at the historic Nassau County Court House in Fernandina Beach or the James S. Page Governmental Complex, 96135 Nassau Place, Suite 3, Yulee, Florida 32097.

Registering by mail is an option, by following the  instructions listed on the supervisor of election website .  The application is available on the SOE website and must be printed and signed. The application may be mailed or delivered to either SOE office locations.

Well Ms. Cannon has everything ready for the runoff election. Now, the voters who live in FB certainly need to be prepared to vote! One of the Power Grabbers was defeated and now one more needs to go. Don’t let a few elected city and county officials run your town. Our job is to elect the best candidate and not the one who acts like a talking puppet for a select few. It’s your choice, make the right one!

As stumpjumper put it so well, –it is our job to elect the best candidate. I would hope before you vote you look up where each stand and have stood in the past on issues that effect us the most. Think about how you want institutions like the Council on Aging, or our other charities supported. Does supporting them take the burden off the City and in the end save us money as does the human society? Look and see if you agree that fiscal responsibility has been demonstrated over the past three years with the returning of long term low interest loans borrowed for various projects. Ask yourself what projects were in the works and where are we now in relation to there completion and how funding is being suggested to start or to complete these projects. Has the city demonstrated good sound government and are they moving in the direction over the last three years that make you feel comfortable? If so the choice is easy. To get to the point, this is about Charlie and Tim. Look at where each one has stood in the past, what each one has supported or haven’t supported in the past, and what each one will do for us in the future. It is also important to look at who is going to be on the commission over the next few years and how as a unified body they will govern. Who is the best fit? Who in your mind will make a more coheasive member to the overall direction this commission will take? It’s not like we don’t know them folks. It’s not like we don’t know what each stand for. It’s like not like we don’t know what they have contributed to the commission in the past. Think about where you want the City go. Think about the simple arithmetic of how you want your money spent. Most of all think about how forward thinking each candidate is. Look at the facts, the voting records, and their thoughts on to best pay for the needed improvements the city needs and deserves. Above all go out and vote and get everyone you know to vote. This seat will make a world of difference over the next three years.
