Nassau County businesses receive CARES funding

Those are just a few of the headlines that have run in newspapers across the country since this pandemic began.

Nassau County has been particularly hard hit since tourism is the County’s largest job creator and a leading driver of its economy.

According to the Amelia Island TDC, “The hospitality industry supports over 25% of jobs, generates 38% of sales taxes, and over $40 million in net economic benefits to Nassau County.”

Yet it doesn’t stop there. Take a look at the list of area companies that have received money from Nassau CARES and is shows business seeking relief range from retail establishments to concrete manufacturers to web site designers to payday loan providers.

As best explained on the County website: The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act has authorized more than $2 trillion to counter the impact of COVID-19 and its effects on individuals, families, governments and businesses. President Trump signed the initial legislation on March 27, 2020. $150 billion was to be distributed to State, Local, and Indian Tribal Governments.

The State of Florida received $8.328 billion and Nassau County, as a county with a population of less than 500,000 was slated to received $15,464,380. For the smaller counties, like Nassau, monies are to be distributed by the Governor’s office. The Nassau County Chamber of Commerce and Board of County Commissioners have worked diligently and effectively to see that Nassau County gets its fair share and in a timely manner.

Nassau County received the first part of its (total) CARES allocation – $3,866,095 in July and is eligible for another $11,598,285 but that amount will be made available on a reimbursement basis only. Of the total, the plan developed by Nassau County was to allocate $2,420,000 to Small Business Recovery Assistance.

While the application deadlines for both Round 1 and Round 2 have long since passed, passed, not all awards have been made. Initially, the grant amount was to be $5,000 per business but was later increased to $10,000. ALL recipients (whether applicants from Round 1 or Round 2) will now receive the maximum amount of $10,000.
