Candidate for City Commission, Group 1

The abilities that I can bring to the City Commission are those developed in more than 40 years of learning . . . throughout the world  . . . in family, in school and industry.  They include:

Experience in business . . . large and small                        – Problem Solving

Hard work                                                                                  – Leadership

Lessons learned

There is a big difference between good management  . . . doing things right; and leadership . . . doing the right thing.  Both are necessary, but good management, the doing of things right, ultimately derives from leadership, doing the right thing

There is never a simple answer to a difficult problem.

Believe in the natural good nature of people.  All of us want basically the same things, a good and healthy family, successful work, supportive friends, happiness.  We want these things without interfering in our neighbors’ attempt to achieve the same ends though perhaps in a different way.  Conflicts do arise, but belief in the general good nature of all leads most often to good results for all

If you want to ensure a good result, involve your “community” whether large or small.  Gather the facts, consult the experts, make the plan.  Then the community will make it work

In a more specific way, my life has been spent working throughout the world in consulting, engineering and the manufacture of highly complex machinery.  Success required looking at problems from every angle, projecting consequences, calculating costs, building the solutions.  This experience will prove helpful in almost every aspect of city operations.

I have attended almost every meeting of the city commission for the past 6 years.  I know where commissions have been successful; watched when they have been less so.  I have sat in on the making of a half dozen budgets, I have friendly relations with our city staff.  If elected, I know the landscape.  I hit the ground running.

Editor’s Note:  This is the first of four questions in a series  posed to candidates for the Fernandina Beach City Commission.   The answers come to our readers unedited and in the candidates own words.  We rotate the order of candidates from day to day.  The candidates who have qualified are David B. Austin, Andrew Curtin, Johnny Miller, and Lynn Williams.  The Fernandina Observer does not endorse candidates.
