Editor’s Note: Thanks to the help of the staff at the Fernandina Beach Police Department, we received copies of police reports involving car burglaries that took place in the city during May and June.  The Fernandina Observer was informed that some  individuals have experienced car windows broken and  items stolen from their vehicles in the city and county.  Although appearing below  is a small sampling of city only car robberies, we thought by posting a brief summary of some of the incidents, it would serve to remind our readers to lock their cars, and encourage the removal of  valuable possessions.

City Car Burglaries

May 4, 2018 1866 Indigo Street – Unlocked car.  Property stolen

May 6, 2018,  1st Avenue, Locked car, broken window,  money and credit cards stolen.

May 18, 2018, Egans Creek Park – Family fishing outing.  Owner recalls locking car.  A child noticed the car door opened and ran toward the car.  The child’s mother then heard,  “Don’t take my chips.” Mother observed  four male subjects around the vehicle who began to  walk toward Main Beach.  Money was stolen from two wallets that were left in the car.  The males were described as 3 white and and one Hispanic.  The responding officer noted four incidents in May involving three juveniles and the descriptions given of some of the suspects matched.

June 8, 2018  – 614 S. Fletcher Ave, Unlocked vehicle belonging to a couple on vacation.  In the afternoon hours, a handgun and GPS were stolen.

The above report says, “…small sampling of city only car robberies”

The proper term is burglaries. The Police Department language uses “burglary”. A robbery is an entirely different class of crime.
