Although Christopher Columbus never set foot on Amelia Island, replicas of two of his sailing ships are visiting the Fernandina Beach City Marina this weekend for all to enjoy.  Ship visitors thronged to the docks Friday to catch a glimpse of these noteworthy vessels.  Ticket sales for tours were brisk.

DSCN1914The ships will remain in the marina and open for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through Monday, March 24. Prices range from $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $6 for children. Children under 4 are free. Groups of 15 or more receive a discounted rate of $5 per person.  According to the Columbus Foundation website, “no funds from government agencies or private foundations are received.” Tours pay for the ships’ operations.

DSCN1925According to Steven, a crew spokesman, the crewmembers come from all over the United States.  During their port calls they see 800-1,200 visitors a day.  Another crewmember estimated that by 4:00 p.m. today, about 900 visitors had been aboard the ships during the first day of their visit.  In addition to the price of admission, the Foundation is also doing a brisk business in postcards and limited souvenirs.

DSCN1922Take advantage of the good weather to pay a visit to the city marina this weekend for a truly unique adventure!

The marina parking lots fill quickly.  Visitors are advised that additional parking is available at the south end of the marina property, the city parking lot at 2nd and Alachua Streets, and in the lot across from City Hall on 2nd Street.
