Editor’s Note:  Fernandina Beach city residents impacted by the tornado that moved through South Fletcher Avenue toward Highland Drive in the Forest Hills subdivision on June 6 , are voicing their appreciation for the work done by City staff.   According to City Manager Joe Gerrity, city employees “worked most of the weekend to clear streets, and debris of the storm residue.”

Thank you city staff for your dedication.  It is moments such as these when many of us appreciate the often overlooked benefit of living in Fernandina Beach; a quick response!

It was the quick response that impressed residents in the hardest hit neighborhoods of Ocean Oaks, and Seaside at Amelia.  “We [Seaside] were universally impressed with the City’s response,” says Carl Winner, president of the Seaside at Amelia homeowners association.  “It seemed like most of the City’s staff with all of the City’s equipment were here in minutes, and they worked into the evening and through the weekend, opening the roads and clearing away the mess.”

Shortly after the tornado touched down, city fire, police, utilities, maintenance, and sanitation crews were on the scene. Streets closed by storm debris were reopened before the end of the day.

Yes, major kudos to the Police, Fire Rescue, Maintenance and Utilities departments as well as FPU and Advanced for their hard work. Just glad to hear there were no people injured.
