The August 28 Primary is now behind us, but the November General Election, in which we elect candidates running for federal and state offices (as well as some local offices) is on the horizon.

If you are a bona fide county resident, you have until October 9, 2018 to register with the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections to vote in the November election.

All information regarding voting requirements, where and how to register, and how to change party affiliation, may be found on the Supervisor of Elections website:  www.VoteNassau.com.

As of this writing, there are 66,150 registered county voters.  By party affiliation, 57.5 percent of those are registered Republicans; 21.8 percent are registered Democrats.  The remaining 20.8 percent are registered in minor parties or have declared that they have no party affiliation.  Regardless of affiliation, all registered voters may vote in each race on the ballot in November.

Only 31.08 percent of registered county voters cast ballots in the Primary Election.  While this is not a bragging point for any community, it was pretty typical for turnout in a primary election.

Why this fall’s General Election is so important

This year Florida voters will elect one United States Senator and 27 members of Congress.  They will also choose a new Governor and a Lieutenant Governor as well as the Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, Commissioner of Agriculture, 20 State Senators and 120 State Representatives.

Voters will also be asked to weigh in on as many as 13 referendums, each of which requires a positive vote from 60 percent or more of the electorate for approval.

Actually only half of the State’s 40 State Senators are up for election. They serve 4 year terms. OUR State Senate seat is one of those up for election this year.
