Fernandina Beach Mayor Sarah Pelican recognized many outstanding citizens and other significant activities with city proclamations and resolutions at the April 16, 2013 Regular Meeting of the Fernandina Beach City Commission (FBCC).
She proclaimed the week of April 16-19, 2013 “Marine Trawler Owners Association Week.” This organization is spending its second consecutive Spring Southern Rendezvous in Fernandina Beach’s City Marina, bringing more than 30 vessels and their owners to enjoy the city and its amenities. Pelican thanked representatives of the group, along with City Marina Manager Joe Springer, adding that there has been talk that the group might return once more next year.
Mayor Pelican proclaimed May 3,4, and 5, 2013 as “The 50th Annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival – The Year of the Golden Shrimp.” Mark Deaton, event chair, and many of the festival volunteers were on hand to accept the proclamation.
Pelican also proclaimed April 2013 “Safe Digging Month,” urging citizens to always call 811 before digging. She presented the proclamation to Fino Murallo, Division Chief/EMS of the city Fire Department.
Former Fernandina Beach Mayor Charles Albert was honored via Resolution 2013-51 in recognition of his 15 years of outstanding service on the city’s Board of Adjustments. Mr. Albert thanked Mayor Pelican and the Commission for the honor, adding that he had received another honor from the Council on Aging earlier in the day. He expressed his strong belief in helping others, especially young people.
Mayor Pelican had an opportunity to honor one of the FBCC’s own by recognizing City Commissioner Pat Gass for 19 years of outstanding service on the city’s Board of Adjustments via resolution 2013-54. Gass, who was required to relinquish her seat upon election to the City Commission, accepted the resolution in person.
Not present but also honored by the FBCC were Eric Bartelt and Neil Blalock. Mayor Pelican read Resolution 2013-52, expressing appreciation to Bartelt for 7 years of outstanding service on the city’s Planning Advisory Board and Resolution 2013-53, expressing appreciation to Blalock for 5 years of outstanding service on the city’s Board of Adjustment.
Following the Mayor’s presentations, the FBCC passed all associated resolutions by unanimous vote.
