“Repair to the existing Fountain would have equaled or exceeded the cost of replacement.”

Work will begin on Tuesday, July 24, to replace the existing Fountain at the Historic Centre Street Court House. The replacement of the Fountain is the result of the efforts of Judge Robert M. Foster. Foster included funding for the Fountain as part of a two year renovation of the Court House which also contained repair to the roof and flashing, pressure washing and sealing brick and the installation of new windows and doors.  The replacement cost of the fountain is being funded by court filing fees.

The Amelia Island Fernandina Restoration Foundation originally purchased and installed the Fountain in 1989. The Fountain was dedicated to the memory of Pat Williams, wife of the late Aubrey Williams. Both served on the AIFRF Board of Directors for over 15 years and Pat Williams was President for 3 years.

The Fountain is a replica of the fountain that once stood in front of  the City Water Works. The fountain was originally purchased from Robinson Iron in Alexander City, Alabama. The replacement fountain was also fashioned by the Robinson Iron Works. Repair to the existing Fountain would have equaled or exceeded the cost of replacement.

The Amelia Island Fernandina Restoration Foundation is funding the installation. Installation is being managed by Clayton Buchanan, Buchanan Builders.

Completion of the project is expected by the end of this week.

The AIFRF was formed in 1970 to promote the preservation of the architectural and historical heritage of Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach.

Can the fountain be repurposed into a planter somewhere in the downtown area?
