Fernandina Beach police officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of South 9th Street and Elm Street at 7:22 PM yesterday evening. On scene investigation revealed that an earlier dispute led to an armed confrontation as one individual fired at least four rounds from a vehicle into a small crowd of people standing more than 100 feet away.

Responding officers located a gunshot victim at the scene. Jovan Leonard Richo, a Jacksonville man with local ties, was treated by Fernandina Beach Fire/Rescue at the scene and then transported to Baptist Nassau. Richo, 42 years of age, was later flown to Jacksonville by air ambulance and remains in serious condition.

Detectives met with several witnesses at the scene and determined that the shooter, Zachary Verdier Jamison, 32 years of age, was personally known to witnesses at the scene. The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office was requested to make contact with Jamison at his residence and located him in the area of an apartment complex on Old Nassauville Road in unincorporated Nassau County, where he was taken into custody and transported back to Fernandina Beach for questioning.

Fernandina Beach detectives continue to work this investigation.
