An early morning fire alarm response is quickly changed to a residential structure fire at 2796 Racheal Avenue, Fernandina Beach, FL.
At 8:42 AM, multiple units from Fernandina Beach Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Rescue responded to the early morning fire that resulted in significant damage to the structure and contents. A fire alarm was received from the residence and units responded to find moderate smoke emitting from the roof and eves of the home and the residents outside of the structure.
Firefighters entered the structure with hand lines and made their way to the fire where they encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions in the upstairs area of the residence that had spread to the attic and adjacent rooms. Firefighters searched the residence for occupants while others worked to extinguish the fire.
The fire was brought under control within an hour after arrival of the first fire units. It took 22 firefighters 2 hours to completely extinguish the fire due to the location of the fire within the residence. No occupants or firefighters were injured due to the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined currently, but the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
The Fernandina Beach Fire Department encourages residents to have and maintain working smoke alarms in their homes outside of every bedroom. More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
