At last, railroad workers are making much needed repairs to the Centre Street rail crossings.  For two days, workers have attacked the deteriorating railroad ties and asphalt adjacent to the tracks.

Nearly a year ago, City Manager Joe Gerrity,  requested permission from the city commission to put the railroad on notice as to the conditions of the tracks. After that request, Jennifer Niles Massachusetts resident sustained injuries after being “thrown out” of her wheelchair. (Click here for previous Fernandina Observer article.)

Although the repairs will offer improvement over  previous conditions, it is yet to be seen if  pedestrian crossings will provide easier access for handicapped individuals and comply with federal government ADA requirements.
