Amelia Park to host City Commission Candidate

Submitted Press Release
Amelia Park Neighborhood Association

September 24, 2014 4:43 p.m.

DSCN1132 RotatedAmelia Park, a traditional neighborhood development located within the city limits of Fernandina Beach, has the distinction of having one of the highest voter turnout percentages in Nassau County. Of 264 residents registered to vote in the 2012 elections (about 10% of the total number of registered voters within the precinct), 91% did so.

Because of the high level of interest in local politics, Amelia Park will host a Candidate Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 30th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm in the Social Hall at Holy Trinity Church (located off Citrona on Lake Park Drive, across from the YMCA). Dan Scanlan, a reporter for the Jacksonville Times-Union who covers Nassau County news, will moderate the forum. Amelia Park residents have been invited to submit questions to be asked of the candidates, and all candidates will have been given the questions in advance to prepare their presentations to the community. All who are vying for the two available seats on the City Commission — Charlie Corbett, Robin Lentz, Sarah Pelican, Tim Poynter, and Roy Smith, Jr. — have been invited to participate.

In conjunction with the Candidate Forum, Amelia Park will also launch a voter registration drive, to encourage the majority of residents in this 375+ home development to register for the party of their choice, and to vote in the General Election on Tuesday, November 4th.

The Candidate Forum on Sept. 30th is free and open to the public. Call 277-2664 for
more information.

Editor’s Note: Robin Lentz is challenging current Vice Mayor Sarah Pelican for Group 3. Tim Poynter, and Roy G. Smith, Jr. are challenging current commissioner Charlie Corbett for Group 2.

Please vote. When you do not take the time to vote you are actually voting for the person whom you would not have voted for if you voted. Sounds crazy, but it’s a fact! I can’t vote in the city election, but I highly encourage all registered voters to vote. How about 50% turn-out! Wow!

Certainly worthy of attending although I don’t favor submitting the questions in advance to the candidates. The candidates should be aware of the major issues and the questions likely to be asked by the moderator so it is a good chance to see how prepared they are and the thought process they go through in their response. In the past I have seen forums where they knew the questions in advance and the candidates simply read their prepared response. I’m sure there will be a good turnout and can’t wait to see the feedback.

Good words Andy. Wish I could be there, I am not here and will not be able to attend. Your right, everyone should attend and I am sure it will be an informative and lively debate.
