Editor’s Note:  After a recent rain storm, Don Wiest found this interesting creature on top of his trash barrel.  “Florida is an entomologist’s dream,” says Don.  “The Wheel Bug is an insect predator–the largest of the so called ‘Assassin Bugs.’ His research indicates a sting by a Wheel Bug is worse than a bee sting, and it is the only species with the cogwheel-like structure on its back.  We thank Don for his contribution to the Fernandina Observer.

Don Wiest is a full time Amelia Island resident. A native of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin and graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Don spent 32 years working for Eastman Kodak prior to moving to Amelia Island in 1996. His early interest in photography played a role in his choice of company, following service in the Navy.

If you can reach Don and Kate, please wish them a Happy New Year 2014
for us. We were thinking about old friends and associates in Tokyo and
Hisako recalled conversations with Kate. We permanently live in Tokyo
and have a country place in the mountains. Fortunately, the winds bypassed us after the Fukushima disaster, or we would not have been allowed to enter the property. After several years teaching Management of Technology, I have too much available time. Hisako still coaches her old students for an annual recital in Tokyo. Sid and Hisako Azumi Feinleib
