Clever Little Lies is about the importance of family and what we’re willing to do to protect our loved ones from disastrous mistakes. In this case, the mistake involves sex, love, and secrets in an outrageous comedy by the Memphis and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change playwright, Joe DiPietro.

The play opens in the locker room of a tennis club with a father/son heart-to-heart talk revealing that the son is having an affair. Dad is devastated, because his son, Billy, is himself a new father in what appears to be a happy marriage.
Meanwhile, Billy’s mother learns that her son’s marriage is in jeopardy, and she is determined to fix any and all problems over coffee and dessert, leading to an evening of laughs, tears, truths, lies, and touching surprises.

Director Jennifer Webber’s cast of experienced actors include Gill Johnston, Diana Herman, Joseph Stearman, and Rachel Tyler. They portray a family in crisis, both comic and poignant. Webber says, “You can experience this show as a comedy that can also make you shed a tear, or a drama that also makes you laugh,” as the show deals with love, marriage, adultery, and good old fashioned parental interference.

The New York Times called this contemporary adult play “good old fashioned comfort food for theatregoers…a blend of comedy and sentiment with maybe just a hint of sting.”
Performances of Clever Little Lies are at 8 p.m. May 17-18, 23-25, with a 4 p.m. matinee on May 19 at 209 Cedar Street . Open seating begins thirty minutes before curtain. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students through college and are available at AmeliaCommunityTheatre.org or by calling the box office at (904)261-6749. This show is rated PG- 13 for adult content and language.
