African-American Singer/Songwriter Makes It in Nashville –
To Perform at Story & Song Bookstore on Saturday

As a music therapist in a Georgia state mental hospital, Kyshona Armstrong started out enabling others to enjoy the healing properties of songwriting, and keeping her thoughts to herself. At UGA, she played oboe and steel drums, but realized that neither instrument was well suited to coaxing patients into musical self-expression. So she got into singing, playing acoustic guitar and songwriting.
At a certain point, her emotional investment in her patients’ pain became too much to purge at coffeehouse open mics. So Kyshona got on the college singer-songwriter circuit, blending skills of empathizing and entertaining. She moved to Nashville in January 2014, spending the first couple months commuting back to Athens to record an album, but easily made friends and landed bookings.
It’s not easy for a singer/songwriter to make it in Nashville — even more so if you’re African-American. So that should tell you all you need to know about the talent you’ll witness on our stage.
Kyshona will perform this Saturday evening, Oct. 5th, at 7:30 at Story & Song Bookstore Bistro, located at 1430 Park Ave. in Fernandina Beach.
