8/30/21 @ 10:30 a.m. – At the July 12, 2021 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution No. 2021-145, designating the section of I-95 between the Florida State line in Nassau County and the Nassau County/Duval County line as “Purple Heart Memorial Highway”.

The Purple Heart is a United States military award for those who have been injured or killed while serving. Senate Bill 78 was approved by the Senate and took effect in July 2020, designating the portion of I-95 and S.W. 32nd Road in Miami-Dade County as “Purple Heart Memorial Highway”. Since then, there has been an initiative to designate other portions of I-95 as well.

Florida Statute, Section 334.071, allows for the erection of markers for designation of a transportation facility for honorary or memorial purposes, contingent upon a resolution by a County Commission to support the designation. The Board adopted Resolution No. 2021-145 at the request of the Florida Department of Transportation.
