District 4

Today, Ray Nelson announced his candidacy for the open Ocean, Highway and Port Authority seat in District 4, running to succeed outgoing incumbent Carroll Franklin. District 4 represents Hilliard, Bryceville and Nassau County’s far west side.

“With over 40 years in the maritime industry, there are few people in Nassau County who understand the needs of the Port of Fernandina, the Port Authority or the employees as well as I do. I have dedicated my life to this unique sector of the economy. I worked hard to understand and succeed in this line of work. The real motivation was knowing no one was behind me but my shadow,” said Nelson. “I look forward to the chance to discuss my vision for the Port with county taxpayers.”

“With the current challenges that exist with the Port, we need leaders on the Authority who will work to repair relationships, understand the nature of the maritime business and ensure the long term sustainability of the Port Authority,” closed Nelson.
Ray’s experience in the maritime industry includes transportation and logistics. He worked as a committee member on the International Longshoreman’s Association negotiating the Master Contract for the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District. He has 30 years of experience in port security and has worked with a variety of law enforcement agencies across all levels of government. In 1999 Ray was presented with an award by the United States Treasury Department for his assistance in recovering stolen vehicles.

Ray has been married for 41 years to his wife Garvin, and together they have one daughter, Megan, and one grandchild, Braxton. In his free time Ray builds, restores and races motocross. He is a member of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association and is a member of the Sunshine State Vintage Motocross Club.
