Nassau County Emergency Management and the Centers for Disease Control recommends masks

Nassau County Emergency Management
May 29, 2020

Reminder: the CDC continues to study the spread and effects of the novel coronavirus across the United States. We now know from recent studies that a significant portion of individuals with coronavirus lack symptoms (“asymptomatic”) and that even those who eventually develop symptoms (“pre-symptomatic”) can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms. This means that the virus can spread between people interacting in close proximity—for example, speaking, coughing, or sneezing—even if those people are not exhibiting symptoms. In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

I hope that ALL in our community pay heed to this advice. I cannot tell you how distressing it is to see people in the stores without a mask. Are we so self-centered and selfish that we cannot don a simple face covering for the times we are shopping and in close proximity to others during a pandemic? The mask is to protect others, not yourself . . . you may carry the virus without symptoms and could be spreading contagion. Listening to the rants of those who cry that this is government tyranny just astounds me. What a spoiled bunch of whiners! Is this what makes America great?? NO!! Let’s just show common sense and support for others — wear a mask if you are shopping!!

Thank you. People are very confused about what the facts are when it comes to wearing masks. It’s helpful to have a local, trustworthy expert give guidance about what we should do.

Wearing a mask can cause hypoxia. Fresh air is good for you. At what point does protecting a few vulnerable individuals justify the destruction of the world economy and incredible harm to billions of people? If someone has doubts about their immune system the onus should be on them to protect themselves.
