The “Invader Raiders” tackle invasive plants at city parks – More volunteers needed

City of Fernandina Beach
Press Release –
June 15, 2021

“The Invader Raiders,” a team of local volunteers, remove invasive plants from our beaches, city parks and natural areas. On June 8, they removed air potato from Simmons Park. This invasive plant outcompetes the native vegetation. There are at least 3 invasive plants in Simmons Park and over 20 invasive plants on the island. During the hotter months the team removes invasive plants for about an hour during scheduled events.

Please volunteer with us and become part of the solution! Even better – form a group to adopt this park or another invaded area. Contact Kathy Russell, Parks and Recreation Dept., [email protected], to register as a volunteer and/or to enquire about how your group may adopt an area for invasive plant removal.
