The business of golf – A message of thanks

“Perhaps the most knowledgeable, capable, and communicative golf course manager I have ever met; thank you to Steve Murphy.”

Next, a very capable golf course superintendent, David Younger, has made significant progress in improving the golf course. And, a special mention to PGA Golf Professional Mike Benjamin, who has an amazing knowledge of golf from “both sides of the pond.”

When my fiancee Nora first showed me an article about the conditions at the Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course, I needed to know more. After all, golf has been good to me over the years. In fact, it has provided me an education and an opportunity to give back to those who are eager to find positivity in a world of stress and pressure.

My immediate response to the article first shown to me was my “call to action.” During my journey to help “fix” what might have been wrong at your course, I decided to have a first-hand look. So, I drove from my home in Clifton Park, New York to the Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course, a door-to-door trip of 1075 miles.

Unexpectedly, immediately upon arrival, I was treated like a celebrity. I am still overwhelmed by the reception that I received. Even though I rarely give the names of the people who are involved, I will make an exception here. Please forgive me if I leave anyone out. I would like to thank several people, not in any order.

Thank you to Susan Steger of the Fernandina Observer for allowing me access to the Golf Course and her readers. Perhaps the most knowledgeable, capable, and communicative golf course manager I have ever met; thank you to Steve Murphy. Next, a very capable golf course superintendent, David Younger, has made significant progress in improving the golf course. And, a special mention to PGA Golf Professional Mike Benjamin, who has an amazing knowledge of golf from “both sides of the pond.”

To ALL of those people that I have spoken to on the incredible Golf Staff, who work hard every day, and the golfers, members of the Advisory Committee, and others thank you for allowing me to help.

With sincere appreciation,

ALAN PRESCOTT

Alan, thanks for all your effort on this issue. I hope you found the 2,000 mile round-trip enjoyable and worthwhile. So what is your assessment of the course. I think in a past article you promised a hole-by-hole report and recommendation to improve the overall condition of the course.
