Fernandina Beach Police Departmenet “Spotlight of the Week” – Sergeant Jason Smith

This week’s employee spotlight is on Sergeant Jason Smith. Jason, a local guy who was born and raised in Fernandina Beach, has been employed with the City for 23 years, 16 of those have been with the FBPD. Jason is assigned as a night shift supervisor in Patrol and has the collateral duty of being the FBPD Agency Inspector for the Intoxilyzer equipment. He has been selected as Officer of the Year twice in his career, he is a DUI Investigations instructor, and has served as a Field Training Officer. Jason is also one of only a handful of Drug Recognition Experts in the State of Florida.

Getting to know Jason:
Jason is a member of the Amelia Masonic Lodge and Fernandina Beach Shrine Club and has been married to his wife, Detective Tina Smith for over 17 years. Jason cherishes family and has two daughters ages 24 and 30 and a 9-year-old granddaughter.
What is your favorite food? I love a good juicy steak cooked on the grill.
What would your career choice be if you were not in law enforcement? I love researching the law and teaching, so if I were not a police officer, I think I would like to be a college professor teaching criminal justice or law.
If you could learn anything, what would it be? I would like to learn to speak several different languages.
What is the best part of your job? I enjoy the fact that everyday is different, you never know what to expect as a police officer.
What is your dream vacation? I would like to have the time to take a long vacation and visit every National Park in the United States.
