On a 3-2 vote at the February 2, 2021 Regular Meeting of the Fernandina Beach City Commission (FBCC), Commissioners voted to approve Resolution 2021- 12, amending and extending the state of emergency due to COVID-19 and requiring face coverings or masks in public places until March 3, 2021.

Newly elected Commissioners Bradley Bean and David Sturges voted against the Resolution, objecting to the use of the work “require” as opposed to “recommend” with respect to wearing face coverings.  They continue to maintain that since per Governor Ron DeSantis’ ruling that such local ordinances are not enforceable, the City cannot impose a requirement.

City Attorney Tammi Bach reported that several municipalities are challenging the Governor’s ruling, which may ultimately head to the State Supreme Court for a ruling.

Commissioner Chip Ross, an emergency room doctor, continues to promote following CDC guidelines that call for face coverings, social distancing and hand washing.  Other Commissioners concur with his advice.

Mayor Mike Lednovich presented his graphic showing the number of Covid cases reported over the past month.  Note that while reported cases have declined slightly, there have been 16 deaths recorded over the past 2 weeks.

Some people say all these social restrictions are really about setting the stage for a new form of totalitarian government under the guise of Covid mitigation. Foreclosures and bankruptcies will result in another wealth transfer to the central banking system. Read the “Communist Manifesto” and you will find central banking is a tenant of communism. It is like the communists and the bankers – along with Big Telecom and Big Pharma – are all on the same team. Big public health programs are also part of Marxism.

“Some people say” — who, exactly? I’d like to know. Before spewing rubbish like that I think you owe us the source.

Ben, not sure what you mean when you use the term “central banking system”. The central bank of the United States is the Federal Reserve System consisting of 12 independent, for profit (non governmental) banks overseen by the Board of Governors (who are quasi-governmental since the Governors are appointed by the President and approved by the Senate). The Federal Reserve does not have consumer or business accounts but serves as the “banker’s bank” for the more than 9,000 banks and credit unions in the United States.

My question: when will enough be enough? What are the metrics? CDC is a national bureaucracy and in no way attuned to local communities. If you really believe small town and local interests are part of DC calculus I cannot imagine what it will take to wake us all up.

Enough will be enough when our fellow Fernandina Beach residents stop dying from the disease. That seems pretty local to me.

Check your data on false positives. Neither of the two diagnostic tests , PCR or antigen, has much of a false positive rate. My bigger worry are false negatives. This allows unrecognized disease spread.

Of the 88,000 people who live in Nassau County ( US Census Bureau estimate) I personally know maybe 50 people. Granted, I’m not a big schmoozer, but that number seems average. That’s less than .06 %. Now you are probably way more popular than me and know 100 times more people than I do which would be 6% of the Nassau county folks. Hard to make any judgement on death causes with such a small sample. But even if it was only one preventable death , using proven methods of prevention such as hand washing, masks, and social distancing , wouldn’t it be worth the hassle? Particularly if that death was my wife, mother, or child…. or yours.
