Cara Curtin, Chair of the American Indian Committee of the local DAR Chapter, accepted a proclamation from Fernandina Beach Mayor John Miller at the City Commission’s November 7, 2018 Regular Meeting declaring November as a month to honor the nation’s American Indian heritage.  In reading the proclamation Miller said, “We recognize the contributions American Indians have made to enhance the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of America today. Their customs and traditions are respected and celebrated as part of a rich legacy throughout the United States.”  He encouraged citizens to observe the month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.

Mayor John Miller looks on as Cara Curtin highlights recent election of 2 Native American women to House of Representatives.

In accepting the proclamation, Curtin thanked the city and called attention to results of the November 6 General Election.  “For the first time in American history,” she said, “we have two Native American women elected to the House of Representatives.  Sharice Davids is a Democrat from Kansas; and Democrat Debra Haaland from New Mexico.”  Both women have strong military connections via personal service and/or family service.
