City of Fernandina Beach and volunteers help to strengthen dune system

City of Fernandina Beach
March 23, 2021

Volunteers spent a chilly spring Saturday morning planting sea oats in the Fernandina Beach dunes. The dune system protects the barrier island from waves, storm surge and heavy winds. They are literally holding the island together and are now a little stronger because of all of you! #plantingnassausfuture #nassaustrong #fernandinabeach

Volunteers work on a chilly day to strengthen the Fernandina Beach dune system.

There were about 40 volunteers planting about 1,700 plants at beach accesses 4N through 11N. Thank you to so many organizations and volunteers who made this project a reality! Dune Science Group, Fernandina Beach City Commission, Fernandina Beach Parks and Recreation, and Nassau County Public Works (for the irrigation) – thank you!
