8 Flags Aviation will do business as Bent Wing Flight Services when it takes over operations as the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) at the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport on April 1, 2018. The new FBO chose the name in tribute to the airport’s history, which was built during World War II by the U.S. Navy for training on the Corsair F4U airplane.

The Corsair F4U was one of the Navy and Marine Corps’ finest fighter planes with unparalleled power and performance. The plane’s unique inverted gull wings made it highly recognizable and resulted in its nickname of “the Bent Wing Bird.”

Bent Wing Flight Services expects to be operating out of the City’s new airport terminal in June 2018. The terminal, which is still under construction, features an innovative design that is representative of the Corsair plane, complete with wings, a nose section, skylight cockpit and tail.

“The unique design of the new terminal building will quickly distinguish Fernandina’s airport as an iconic aviation landmark,” says Bent Wing Flight Services Owner Brian Echard. “As the FBO providing service from the new terminal, it made sense to rename our business to reflect our community’s pride in the distinguished history of the airport and pay tribute to the members of our military who served in WWII.”

Bent Wing Flight Services’ leased space will feature a 2-story glass lobby with a ½ scale Corsair F4U suspended from the ceiling. The FBO will provide a long list of services to aviators, including fuel services, concierge services, crew cars and rental cars. Additional amenities in the new FBO include a pilot lounge and flight planning room, conference room, canteen and pilot store. Fernandina’s distinctive history will be honored with military and historical memorabilia displayed throughout the building.

The City of Fernandina Beach is building the new airport terminal with grant funding from the Florida Department of Transportation, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the Federal Aviation Administration and additional funds from the Airport Enterprise Fund and 8 Flags Aviation.

If you click on the link to their website and watch the video, for all the complaining that design got — if it ends up looking like that conceptual video, it’ll be a huge improvement and a wonderful asset to the island.
