Sharon Tosi Lacey former Chief Historian for the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Amelia Island Genealogical Society is proud to announce a very special program for its meeting at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, June 21 at the Fernandina Beach Public Library, 25 N 4th St. Our speaker will be the Chief Historian at the U.S. Census Bureau, Sharon Tosi Lacey, PhD, who will present a webinar on Parchments to Printouts: A History of the Census 1790-1950.

This presentation will cover the changes and adaptations of the decennial census from inception through 1950, with a special focus on Amelia Island and the surrounding area. It will provide historical context to researchers as they explore census data. In particular, this will be a unique opportunity to hear more about the 1950 Census records set which was released from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) on April 1, 2022.

Sharon Tosi Lacey has served as the Chief Historian for the U.S. Census Bureau since June 2015. Previously, she spent 25 years as an officer in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves before retiring in 2015 as a Lieutenant Colonel. She holds a B.S. in Engineering Psychology from the United States Military Academy, an M.S. in Education from Long Island University, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Leeds. She is the author of the book “Pacific Blitzkrieg” and a variety of studies and articles on topics ranging from Cromwell’s Army to the Iraq War.
